YLGC challenge the Anglican Primates - October 2003
by Martin
< back
In reponse to the nomination of the opnely gay Gene Robinson as Bishop
of New Hampshire, and the authorisation of gay blessings in the Canadian
diocese of New Westminster, Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury,
called the Anglican Primates (leaders of the different Anglican churches
throughout the world) to a two-day conference at Lambeth Palace. Many
conservative provinces had already voiced their anger, and the hopes of
gay and lesbian people in the Chueh were modest. YLGC decided to protest,
and here's how we got on:
Tuesday 14 October: 5 YLGCs attended a service in St James, Piccadilly,
celebrating the inclusive nature of the Church. The service was organised
by Changing Attitude, and prayed for the Primates on the eve of their
meeting.
Wednesay 15 October: 3 YLGCs kept a vigil outside Lambeth Palace, displaying
the YLGC banner and lighting a candle. Evening Prayer was said.
Thursday 16 October: the day of the Press Conference. Martin and Sarah
(pictured) witnessed outside Church House as the Primates made their statement.
In all, our presence was an important one. The Primates were debating
the 'problem' of gay people in the Church. We witnessed that we were not
a problem, but a living and active part of the Anglican Church (and every
church), equal in every respect to all our sisters and brothers. Our challenege
is that the Primates listen to gay and lesbian people, and respond with
love to the diversity of experience which constitutes our Communion.
